LAIR OF THE ECLECTIC DILETTANTE

At the moment, this site is devoted to: "Genres in a Blender". Here, I'll discuss in depth certain crazy, lovable (usually inartistic) movies which defy the conventions of filmaking by combining incompatible genres. The idea is to talk a little bit about the eras and situations that spawned these gems, to joke in a friendly manner about the shortcomings of these films, praise their strengths, and to wittily find Deeper Meanings in them. Let's show those film snobs that there's as much profundity in a simple tale of cowboys vs dinosaurs vs gypsies (Valley of Gwangi) as in any Truffaut classic - and a good deal more fun!

First up, the legendary matinee serial "Phantom Empire", a truly insane hybrid of western, musical, science fiction, swashbuckler, and showbiz procedural made in 1935!

Next, the original horror-comedy, "Abbott & Costello meet Frankenstein" (and Dracula and the Wolfman and the Invisible Man and cinema's first female mad scientist).

And now for the incredibly stupid time-travel fairy tale "The Undead", produced and directed by Roger Corman.

Now, come on over to The Valley of Gwangi - the only place where you'll ever see cowboys rope a T-Rex!
